Lake O’Hara, west of Lake Louise offers, great hikes, but the 11 km / 6.8 mi access is closed to cars; a shuttle runs throughout the summer. Call 250-343-6433 well in advance to reserve.

Nearby Emerald Lake is circled by a 5 km / 3 mi walk; also access the 0.8 km / 0.5 mi trail to Hamilton Falls. The Burgess Shale near Field contains 500-million year old invertebrate fossils; see a roadside exhibit and small display at the Field Visitor Centre. Yoho Burgess Shale Geoscience Foundation guides 8- and 10.5-hr hikes to the access-restricted fossil beds; reserve well ahead. 1-800-343-3006, burgess-shale.bc.ca
