Yoho National Park

Field, British Columbia

Description provided by Editors

Lake O’Hara (Map 2, 16E) west of Lake Louise offers great hikes, but the 11 km (6.8 mi) access is closed to cars; a shuttle runs June 19-Oct 4 (call 250-343-6433 well in advance to reserve an 8:30 am or 10:30 am ride). Nearby Emerald Lake (Map 2, 14K) is circled by a 5 km (3 mi) walk; also access the .8 km (.5 mi) trail to Hamilton Falls. The Burgess Shale near Field contains 500-million year old invertebrate fossils; see a roadside exhibit and small display at the Field Visitor Centre. Yoho Burgess Shale Geoscience Foundation (1-800-343-3006, burgess-shale.bc.ca) guides 8- and 10.5-hr hikes to the access-restricted fossil beds; reserve well ahead. Other short hikes: Wapta Falls (2.3 km/1.4 mi); Centennial Trail (2.5 km/1.6 mi circuit); Walk-in-the-Past (2 km/1.3 mi) to an old Spiral Tunnel locomotive; Point Lace Falls/Angel’s Staircase (2.2 km/1.4 mi). 250-343-6783.
