Hwy 2A north from High River leads to Okotoks. The town’s name comes from the Blackfoot word for Big Rock, and refers to an 18,000-ton glacial erratic sitting conspicuously in an open field just 10 min west of town on Hwy 7. The largest known erratic in North America, the boulder is believed to have been carried to this spot from the Jasper area by glacial movement 10,000 years ago. In town, The Station is a visitor information centre set in a renovated CPR train station; open daily. 403-938-3204. Okotoks town office, 403-938-4404.
