Where to get pizza and pie in Calgary for Pi Day

In our geeky hearts, Pi Day (March 14) is one of the best days of the year. The annual celebration of pi, the sexy mathematical constant you know and love, is observed around the world with specials on arguably two of the best foods on the planet—pizza and pie.

Hop by one of Calgary’s Blaze Pizza locations to add some pizzazz to your day for personal pizzas at the special pi price of $3.14.

The Beltliner is participating in Pi Day again this year by offering apple and Saskatoon mini pies for —you guessed it—$3.14.

Crave Cupcakes will be selling raspberry sour cream pies for $5. The single-serving pies are baked with raspberry sour cream filling and topped with brown sugar pecan crumble, along with a pi symbol in honour of Beakerhead (and the Mathletes among us)— $1.00 from each pie sold will benefit Beakerhead programming. Pre-order or stop by a store on March 13 or 14.

This new restaurant in Bridgeland with quirky rabbit-themed décor cooks globally inspired comfort food. They’ve officially opened their doors to the lunch crowd, providing hungry diners with tantalizing menu options like buttermilk fried chicken with kimchi potato salad, or grilled flank steak with hot and sour wild rice.

Get your brunch on at Murrieta’s Bar & Grill


Murrieta’s is officially serving brunch on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 am to 3 pm. You’ll find mouth-watering traditional brunch dishes like eggs benedict, along with modern fare including banana bread French toast, tiramisu pancakes, avocado toast and smoked salmon tacos.

Michael Noble launches Noble Fare catering


Michael Noble, the chef behind highly successful and acclaimed restaurants The Nash and Notable in Calgary, launched Noble Fare Catering and Events on March 1.

“We’re doing what we do best in small bites,” Noble said.

Noble Fare will serve weddings, parties and corporate events with the delicious and familiar comfort food you know and love from Notable and The Nash, along with options from a wine and cocktail list.

We were lucky enough to try some bites at the launch party, which included unbelievably gooey mac n’ cheese and tasty mini burgers cooked right in Noble’s restaurants for catering customers.

Vintage Chophouse offering Social Hour

Vintage Chophouse and Tavern now has a social hour menu with food and drink specials. We’re eyeing meaty and decadent plates like the BBQ glazed confit duck wings for $12, pork belly tacos for $5 each and beef ribs for $10.

Where to Dine Awards: Calgary’s Best Restaurants 2017

Our panel of 10 judges had a difficult task this year due to the extremely high bar that is being set by Calgary’s restaurants. There was much rigorous debate before they narrowed it down to 12 stellar examples of the very best the city has to offer. Each of these restaurants (presented in alphabetical order) are well worth the time and offer something new to visitors to Calgary—they are all original to our city. We invite you to see for yourself what our judges are raving about.

Winnipeg’s craft brewing scene has exploded recently, with new breweries popping up all over the city. Brewpub Brazen Hall is the latest joy for homegrown hopheads. This well-designed Fort Garry spot styled with rustic wood, plush leather, and gleaming geometric fixtures opened to instant approval from pub lovers who now fill the space with lively chatter. A crisp blonde ale and peppery bière de garde are now on tap with more varieties brewing in the tanks on site. Superb suds are complemented by a fun menu of twists on pub favourites, like gussied-up burgers and wings, as well as filling pastas and brawny meat dishes.

Thanks to careful prep by the chef the lobster at lbs. comes out of the shell easily, eliminating the fuss of enjoying the crustacean.

Feast on fresh lobster at lbs(The name, which stands for “Lobster,” “Burger,” and “Salad” is pronounced “pounds”). The short menu has four feature items at only $22 each: the 1.25 lbs. lobster, lobster roll, a burger topped with aged cheddar and bacon, and a lobster salad. Sit back at the large bar and quench your thirst with refreshing cocktails and a rotating selection of non-alcoholic custom sodas. And if you still have room, order the popular lobster poutine made with rich gravy. Grab a drink or dinner at the chic Drake One Fifty during the festival and keep your eyes peeled for famous faces.

In addition to being home to TIFF headquarters and theatres such as the Princess of Wales and Royal Alexandra, the Entertainment District is an embarrassment of riches when it comes to restaurants. Enjoy the California-style vibes and say hello to the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man at Montecito, a joint venture between Ghostbusters filmmaker Ivan Reitman and chef Jonathan Waxman. The internationally-inspired menus at Hush and Luma win over moviegoers, with such offerings as maple glazed salmon and grilled quail respectively. Hearty Italian fare can be found at Buca, which serves house-made pastas among other favourites. The upscale Nota Bene is a downtown favourite for chef David’s lee’s impeccable menu, as well as the extensive gin list.

Catching a flick at the Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre? Both JaBistro  and Richmond Station are within walking distance. Feast on beautifully-plated fresh sashimi and sushi at the former, while the latter is co-owned by Top Chef Canada winner Carl Heinrich with a seasonally-changing menu. The Chase has seafood-themed offerings like Arctic char, octopus and king crab, while further afoot, the Drake One Fifty is an ultra hip spot in the Financial District serving the likes of squid ink pasta and suckling pig porchetta.
