The Annex

You Are Here: The Annex

Close to the University of Toronto, this historic ‘hood has long been known as a place where students and professors mingle—its Bloor and Dupont street boundaries host diverse retail, culinary and cultural hot spots. (more…)

Hot Shopping: Navigate T.O.’s Neighbourhoods

Map of the Trinity Bellwoods area by Marlena Zuber

Marlena Zuber is a multi-faceted Torontonian: she draws, paints, works for a non-profit and is in an indie band. But it’s her informal cartography skills that are turning heads these days. Zuber’s charming yet realistic maps of favourite nabes—The Annex, Kensington Market, Harbourfront and Trinity Bellwoods among them—are a hot commodity. Pick up a framed map ($45 to $85) or a greeting card ($4 each) from Artistry Cards.

Hot Dining: Chalett’s New Bistro is “Here”

After more than a year of delays, Ici Bistro has made its debut in the foodie-friendly Annex neighbourhood. With only 24 seats, call it the “little restaurant that could,” but know, too, that it’s backed by a big name: renowned chef and sommelier J.P. Chalett. Here, Chalett reminds diners why he remains one of Toronto’s top toques, with a carte of classic, accessible bistro-style offerings—available in either full-size or two-thirds servings—that could include a foie gras torchon with black trumpet mushroom croquette ($18 or $28) and Apicius-style duck magret redolent of honey, anise and saffron ($17 or $29). Ontario and French wine pairings are suggested for each delicious dish.
