Located in the middle of the city, next to the harbour, the Chip Shack offers “handcut island fries” that come on their own or alongside main dishes, like fish and chips. While in the city, also look for the famous chocolate-covered COW chips sold at the nearby Anne of Green Gables Chocolates store.

The Chip Shack, bottom of Prince St., Charlottetown, P.E.I, 902-316-2399, Facebook page.

Collin’s Lobster Shop, for example, sells an assortment of live and cooked lobsters. With your cold treat (locals eat the lobsters chilled), you’ll get lemons, hot butter and napkins. And you'll need the napkins: eating the shellfish by hand is almost compulsory.

Collin's Lobster Shop, 12 Ocean Dr., Alma, N.B., 506-887-2052, Facebook page.

- Alma, N.B.

Sitting in the centre of a cozy fishing village, less than an hour away from the iconic Hopewell Rocks, Harbour View Market feels like a grandma’s kitchen. Patrons enter through an attached convenience store and pay their bills at the store’s cash register. But don't let the laid-back atmosphere fool you—Harbour View Market offers bowls of fresh and creamy seafood chowder, lobster dinners and hearty omelets stuffed with cheese.

Harbour View Market & Restaurant, 8598 Main St., Alma, N.B., 506-887-2450, Facebook page.

- Malpeque, P.E.I.

This tiny eatery, squeezed into the second floor of a real barn, is both casual and atmospheric. The Barn serves everything from scallops to oysters to hard clams—all deliciously fresh. After dinner, be sure to take a stroll along the local fishing harbour to see where that seafood arrives on land.

Malpeque Oyster Barn, Route 20, Malpeque Wharf Rd., Malpeque, P.E.I., 902-836-3999.

- Halifax, N.S.

Once you get tired of all the rustic food shacks, head to this cheery nautical themed establishment in downtown Halifax. The family-friendly eatery offers everything you'd want in a seafood restaurant: a ceiling-mounted dory, a foghorn and eight different kinds of oysters brought in from across the Maritimes.

The Waterfront Warehouse, 1549 Lower Water St., Halifax, N.S., 902-425-7610, official website.
