Photo Friday

River Surfing, Montreal, Quebec

Every Friday we feature an inspirational travel photo of a Canadian destination taken by one of our readers.

Photo by Pedro fait de la Photo

Why we chose it: This photo proves that surfers will catch waves wherever they can find them—on the Saint Lawrence River right in downtown Montreal, for instance. Whitewater kayakers also frequently tackle this standing wave, dubbed Habitat 67 for the adjacent famed housing complex. Kudos to the photographer on this epic action shot—and to the surfer for braving the northern waters!

Why we chose it: Fall is spectacular in Canada and until it’s over we’re gonna milk it for all it’s worth. A far cry from the standard foliage landscape, this unique abstract reflection is practically a Monet. Sizing the image as a square, mimicking a canvas, was a perfect choice.

Why we chose it: Ever wonder what the fuss is about prairie skies? Calgary-based photographer Cody James removes the guesswork with his series of stirring photos of Alberta landscapes. The sky itself is a masterpiece, but it’s no easy feat to capture all of the nuances in those windswept clouds, the rays of light that illuminate the fields, and a sense of how quickly prairie storms roll in. Ominous conditions to be sure, but they make for excellent light!

Why we chose it: Ever wonder what speed looks like? Now you know. The vibrant colour and nighttime motion blur effect in this shot make it a work of abstract art. At first glance you might miss the columns and entryway in the background: Who knew Union Station could be so sexy?

Why we chose it: The photographer used flashlights to illuminate the red boulders that frame this lovely shot of PEI’s north-central shore. Near-perfect symmetry, unbelievably rich colour, and a creative use of light…it was love at first click.
