Ottawa Hot Shopping

Hot Shopping: Give ’em the Boot

With the change of seasons comes the excuse to buy new footwear. Why not invest in something stylish and practical? Sebago is known for its well-crafted, nautical-inspired footwear, and the fall 2012 collection is full of smart, go-anywhere boots and shoes for men and women. Each style (like the Saranac Tall lace, shown here) gives a rugged New England feel to any autumn ensemble. Sebago is available at nrml, 184 Rideau St., 613-562-2043, nrml.ca.

Hot Shopping: Show Your True Colours with Makeup from Lush

Lush Makeup

Rather than matching your makeup to what you’re wearing, Lush thinks you should match it to how you’re feeling. This is the philosophy behind the company’s new 30-prodcut Emotional Brilliance line, which offers lip colours, liquid eyeliners, and cream eye shadows (all $22.95). Shoppers spin a wheel and choose the three shades that stand out most to them. Each colour has a corresponding word, and that word is said to be significant to your current subconscious needs. Regardless of whether you believe in the philosophy, the products are pretty, well-made, and vegan, and that’s bound to make you feel good.

ByWard Market, 43 William St., 613-241-5874; St. Laurent Centre, 613-564-5874, www.lush.ca.

One of Canada’s most iconic companies is celebrating a major milestone this fall: Shoppers Drug Mart is turning the big 5-0, and Canadians are invited to join the party. The celebrations kick off with National Makeover Weekend (Sept. 8 and 9), where customers can book an appointment at their local Shoppers for a free makeover. The company is also releasing a limited edition Quo Cosmetics 50th Anniversary Collection, which features nail polish, a beauty palette, and brushes. Make sure to enter their national contest to win some major prizes. Talk about getting better with age!

Hot Shopping: Teva Shoes

Teva Links

Cycling is a popular pastime in Ottawa, with riders tackling everything from Gatineau Park to city streets to our lengthy network of trails on two wheels. Join the crowd — and look the part — with the Links shoe from Teva, which was designed in collaboration with freeride mountain biker Jeff Lenosky. The Links’ rubber sole has serious gripping power, and state-of-the-art technology within the shoe actually prevents water from absorbing on a molecular level. Plus, the shoes are stylish enough to transition seamlessly from a rugged mountain ride to a downtown patio. $140.

Available at several Ottawa retailers including Trailhead, 1960 Scott St., 613-722-4229, www.trailhead.ca.

Hot Shopping: Thomas Sabo Watches

Hot Shopping: Lacoste Olympic Polos

Lacoste’s Flag Polo Shirt, $195.

Just in time for the 2012 Olympic Games, Lacoste has added a patriotic twist to its iconic men’s polo shirts. 16 nations, including Canada, are represented through fashionable displays of their flags. The shirts comes in three different styles: For a subtle take, the Croco Flag Polo Shirt ($150) in classic white cotton piqué features Lacoste’s signature crocodile enrobed in a nation’s colours. For more dedicated fans, the colourful Flag Polo Shirt ($195) features a flag emblazoned across the body of the shirt. And if you’d prefer to keep your allegiances to yourself, go for the Limited Edition Polo Shirt ($250), which includes the pennants of all 16 countries. Hot Shopping: The Body Shop Pulse Boutique

The Rideau Centre houses one of the few Body Shop Pulse Boutiques in Canada.

The Body Shop has been helping women feel beautiful for years — and now it’s had a makeover of its own. The store’s Rideau Centre location (along with only two others in Canada) has been transformed into a Pulse Boutique. The shop is laid out in a way that encourages customers to test and ask questions about their favourite products. It’s energetic, interactive, and easy to find what you’re looking for. The store’s makeup section is highlighted, and trained beauty experts are always on hand for free consultations and makeovers. We recommend the Honey Bronze line for summer: Made with honey and beeswax (sustainably sourced, of course), it creates the perfect sun-kissed glow.

Rideau Centre, 50 Rideau St., 613-230-2777, www.thebodyshop.ca

The Clothes Secret offers fashionable consignment finds for discerning fashionistas. Photo credit: Cochrane Photography

Fashionistas on a budget go The Clothes Secret to get outfitted from head to toe. This hidden gem is a family-owned consignment shop that’s been in business for 20 years. (With brand names such as Banana Republic, Michael Kors, Liz Claiborne, and 7 For All Mankind, it’s easy to understand why!) The key?
