Timeless Captures

Complementing the exhibition of Ansel Adams’s prints (for more on this exhibit, please see Shooting Gallery) are more than 70 photographs by Alfred Eisenstaedt, one of the 20th century’s foremost photojournalists. Born in West Prussia (now Poland) in 1898, Eisenstaedt gained renown for his intimate representations of everyday moments in pre-World War II Europe, which were published in a variety of popular illustrated magazines. He later cemented his legend as a photographer for Life magazine in the United States: more than 90 of his images, including the iconic V-J Day Kiss in Times Square, graced the publication’s cover. Drawn from the AGO’s collection of more than 400 Eisenstaedt prints, these unique portraits and news images are a must-see for anyone interested in the origins of modern photojournalism.—Craig Moy
