The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee sings—and spells—its way into the hearts of audiences. In this musical comedy, a quirky group of adolescents compete for the coveted trophy, trying to spell words like “capybara” while struggling with teenage insecurities and unruly hormones. This unique bunch of competitors includes such characters as a baton-twirling overachiever and an awkward boy with a rare mucous-membrane disease who spells with his foot. Their three judges are just as eclectic, including a “comfort counselor” who offers a hug and a drinking box. Adding to the fun, audience members get to show off their spelling skill, too, as voluntary on-stage participants. Care to test your mettle (and that’s not metal!)?
Elgin Theatre, Tuesday to Saturday 8 p.m., Wednesday and weekends 2 p.m. Tickets $50 to $100; call 416-872-5555 to purchase.
