Shooting Galley: Ansel Adams Photography Exhibit

Ansel Adams is perhaps one of the most recognized names in photography. His famous images, which capture the rugged grandeur of the American West, have been reproduced in countless books, calendars and posters. Now, the Art Gallery of Ontario provides the opportunity to view more than 125 of the photographer’s original prints up close. The exhibition, organized by the Boston Museum of Fine Arts with images selected from the comprehensive Lane Collection, spans Adams’s celebrated 50-year career. It features many of his best-known shots, including the majestic vista Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico, and a number of classic depictions of America’s national parks. The show also comprises a surprising group of the photographer’s rare early-career pictures, modernist images, architectural and urban views and portraits. Equally striking in their use of light and shadow, these lesser-known photos provide Adams fans and neophytes alike with a broader view of his monumental portfolio.—Craig Moy
