Say Hello to Alo and Chef Patrick Kriss

FIND VERY FINE FRENCH FARE—AS WELL AS AN EXCELLENT BAR SCENE—AT CHEF PATRICK KRISS’S ALO RESTAURANT

Though he’s arguably one of Toronto’s most talented chefs, Patrick Kriss has also spent a considerable amount of time flying below the culinary radar. No longer. The Toronto-born toque—who cut his teeth under the likes of Daniel Boulud and Splendido’s Victor Barry, before a short but celebrated stint at now-shuttered Acadia—has launched his own restaurant, a French-influenced affair dubbed Alo. Overlooking one of the city’s busiest strips, the intimate oasis of a dining room borders an open kitchen from which Kriss and his team create meticulous tasting menus in the finest classical tradition. A separate bar area caters to guests seeking more casual small plates—or simply a superior cocktail or two.  —Craig Moy
