THE CRAFT BEER SCENE IN TORONTO—AND ACROSS THE PROVINCE—CONTINUES TO EXPAND. CHECK OUT SOME OF THE TOP OFFERINGS DURING ONTARIO CRAFT BEER WEEK AND AT FINE BREWPUBS AND BARS AROUND TOWN.
Ontario Craft Beer Week returns for a sixth annual celebration of small-batch brews. Hundreds of events are scheduled from June 12 to 21 at venues throughout the province—pub crawls, brewmaster dinners, and tours of such facilities as Steam Whistle and Mill Street breweries are just a taste of the offerings. Visit ocbweek.ca for a full list of events and locations.
Taste some locally brewed goodness right from the source. Beer makers like Left Field Brewery and Bellwoods Brewery are open to visitors looking to purchase their ales, stouts, saisons and more, made right on the premises. Try the Sunlight Park from the former’s east-end tap room—it’s made with malted wheat, honey malt and the zest of 100 organic grapefruits—or from the latter, the Skeleton Key imperial stout, aged for a year in a rum barrel with a mixture of spices. Or find a seat at Amsterdam BrewHouse: its lakeside patio is the ideal spot for sipping the likes of raspberry wheat beer or Downtown brown ale.
In the mood to tap into a range of offerings from a single perch? Try King West favourite Bar Hop, which has two-dozen craft beers on draught from the likes of Beau’s All Natural Brewing, Great Lakes Brewery, Sawdust City and Forked River. Bar Volo proffers Canadian-made options fom Indie Ale House, Niagara Oast House, Flying Monkeys, Dieu du Ciel and Howe Sound. Both establishments are active on Twitter, where they announce newly tapped casks and weekly offerings; follow them at @barhopbar and @barvolo.
