TO OCTOBER 5  Ai Weiwei is not the only artistic agent provocateur in contemporary China. The world’s most populous country has, in fact, produced a number of sculptors, painters and image makers whose works question the history, politics and values of the People’s Republic. Because of their supposedly inflammatory subject matter, many such pieces cannot be displayed in China; they can be shown, however, at Arsenal Toronto, which hosts a group exhibition featuring more than a dozen modern Chinese artists. Of course, when art satirizes Communist Party icons so mercilessly—as in the Gao Brothers’ Miss Mao No. 3—it’s not hard to see why the state has taken notice. —Craig Moy
