OCAD U’s Ads for People Shows the Power of the Web
FEBRUARY 7 TO MAY 25
An advertising series for online newspaper The Zimbabwean is just one example of the Ads for People highlighted by Onsite [at] OCAD U.
If you’re not careful, surfing the Internet can turn into an exercise in trying to avoid advertisements, such is the prevalence of promotion online. While we may not like that companies can take advantage of the web’s freedom and low cost to try to sell us all manner of products and services, Ads for People, the latest exhibition at Onsite [at] OCAD U
, examines how the Internet can also help charities and non-governmental organizations get their messages out. Sure, you may see a lot of pop-ups for hair products and online gambling; the flip side is that mass marketing is now similarly available for everything from breast cancer–awareness campaigns to a newspaper for exiled citizens of Zimbabwe. —Anna Marszalek
