Let’s hope that the Justina M. Barnicke Gallery has a good insurance policy, as its latest exhibition could very well “tear the roof off the sucker.” Entitled Funkaesthetics, the multimedia display explores funk music’s development and proliferation into wider artistic spheres. Historical expressions of what the band Parliament once dubbed “supergroovalisticprosifunkstication” are prominent—check out the original Pedro Bell painting for Funkadelic’s Electric Spanking of War Babies album, footage from the influential film Sun Ra and His Intergalactic Solar Arkestra in Space is the Place and Adrian Piper’s performance-based video work, Funk Lessons—and their juxtaposition alongside contemporary interpretations demonstrates funk’s continued relevance as a model of social engagement.
