We tend to think of sneakers as the most utilitarian of footwear options—the comfiest way for us to amble from point A to B. Of course they’re far more fascinating. The Bata Shoe Museum shows us why with its feature exhibition Out of the Box: the Rise of Sneaker Culture, on display through to early 2014. Showcasing more than 120 slick kicks, including turn-of-the-last-century runners, the iconic first edition of Nike’s Air Jordan line, and a number of brand collaborations by renowned visual artists, the display traces the evolution of sneakers—from their athletes-only beginnings to their current status as distinctive urban fashion statement. Check out the gallery below to learn about the exhibition’s most unique sneaks—truly some of the coolest shoes ever—then point your feet toward the museum to get a glimpse for yourself.
