APRIL 6 TO 20  In embracing the new, we tend to undervalue what came before. By purchasing an e-reader, for example, we invariably toss aside our paperbacks. In her latest Bau-Xi Photo exhibition, however, artist Cara Barer emphasizes the importance of showing appreciation for our past—and how, in the right hands, it can once again become something fresh and beautiful. The multidisciplinary artist uses clothespins and curling irons to bend and twist used books into intricate shapes, then photographs them to create, in such images as Lilac (pictured), lasting testaments to an age-old but in-decline method of collecting and sharing information.  —Anna Marszalek
