AUGUST 17 TO OCTOBER 27  There’s not much that hasn’t been said about Ai Weiwei. The prolific and provocative artist has been the subject of countless media profiles, a documentary film and, notably, numerous investigations by the Chinese government. But it’s one thing to know about an artist; it’s another to see his work up close. At the Art Gallery of Ontario, the retrospective Ai Weiwei: According to What? provides your chance to do the latter. Never before exhibited in Canada—indeed, Toronto is the touring show’s only stop in this country—Ai’s output over the past decade includes everything from sculptures and installations to photographs and video pieces. Compelling visuals all, they comprise a must-see primer on one of contemporary art’s biggest stars. —Craig Moy
