10 Places to Spot Celebrities

BELLÍSSIMA Everyone loves a good Italian meal—even Hollywood celebrities! Susan Sarandon, Andy Garcia and Lindsay Lohan are just a few of the famous names who love chef Felice Vacca’s authentic cuisine at Vaticano Trattoria in Yorkville. A stone’s throw away, the romantic Trattoria Sotto Sotto regularly enchants famous folk, including Natalie Portman, Dustin Hoffman and Jason Bateman.

DENIM DEITY Rock stars and teen queens shop at Over the Rainbow in droves, looking for the perfect pair of designer duds. The denim mecca draws in big names like Mick Jagger and Hilary Duff with the latest and greatest from Rock and Republic, J Brand and Paper, Denim & Cloth.

SHOP LIKE A STAR When in Rome, do as the Romans; when in Yorkville, shop. Holt Renfrew, the Canadian equivalent of Bloomingdale’s, grabs the attention of celebs like German actress Diane Kruger and her Canadian boyfriend Joshua Jackson. Further west along Bloor Street, Ashton Kutcher and famous Canucks like Mike Myers and singer Deborah Cox stock up on their leather goods and athletic gear at Roots, a Canadian retail institution.

FOR KIDS, AND KIDS AT HEART A colourful sign draws children and their parents into toy store Kidding Awound. Inside, find hundreds of wind-up antique toys, gag gifts and kitschy items that will amuse everyone, including famous parents such as Julianne Moore and Pierce Brosnan.

JAVA FIX The ubiquitous white and green Starbucks cup is as essential an accessory as Prada shoes. Starbucks (139 Yorkville Ave., 416-922-8922) has taken orders for Sienna Miller, James Franco and Colin Farell, while other celebrities like Wesley Snipes vie for Canadian-coffee staple Second Cup (170 Bloor St. W., 416-975-1723).

DECADENT DIGS A room at the Four Seasons Hotel is as coveted during the festival as a seat at the Oscars. A-listers like Bruce Willis and Gwyneth Paltrow stay at this Yorkville sanctuary, with equally star-studded room service going on downtown at the Fairmont Royal York. A Toronto landmark of elegance and luxury, it attracts festival favourites like Mira Sorvino and John Cusack.

CITY SOOTHER After days of press junkets and premieres, stars like Kate Hudson, Robert Downey Jr. and Hilary Swank relax and recharge at Vikaspa, which offers unique spa treatments such as the full-body facial or the day glow package.

THE BIG SMOKE Whatever the reason to spark up a stogie, Thomas Hinds Tobacconist has one of the largest collections of fine cigars, tobacco products and smokers’ accessories in the city. Pop in for a Montecristo or a Cohiba and you might find the likes of Alec Baldwin, Sean Penn or Charlie Sheen.

SCENE AND BE SEEN Every “It” girl and her entourage is sure to be found enjoying the “social dining” at Kultura, where Jude Law and Ethan Hawke have hung out. Vince Vaughn has hosted a party at this multi-floor lounge, too. Sofia Coppola, Scarlett Johansson and Christina Ricci have all held court at Bloor Street West’s all-white, all-star bright Lobby.

BELLE OF BAY STREET Bistro 990 is one of the city’s biggest stomping grounds for visiting stars all year round. Every year, renowned Canadian director Norman Jewison (Moonstruck, In Country) hosts a Canadian Film Centre barbecue here, and such Hollywood royalty as Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn are just a few of the famous faces who’ve enjoyed the laid-back French resto’s gastronomic delights.
