Spend A Night In Jail While Visiting Ottawa

Spend a night at the 150-year-old jailhouse in Ottawa, which was converted into a hostel

Whether you’re an adventure seeker visiting Ottawa, or someone who just enjoys a good scare, a night at the Ottawa Jail Hostel may be for you. Originally a 150-year-old jailhouse, the hostel is the only one of its kind in North America — as well as being one of the most haunted buildings in Canada. If you’re not convinced, consider that Lonely Planet named it one of the top 10 spookiest buildings in the world. It’s located in downtown Ottawa at 75 Nicholas St. — close to such attractions as Parliament Hill, the Rideau Canal, and ByWard Market — with staff regularly organizing group excursions of their own. Perks include free breakfast and Internet. Plus, Mugshots, the Jail’s bar that’s located in the courtyard, has a scenic view of the gallows where the last public execution in Canada took place. It’s one of the coolest spots to grab a pint. Period. — Meaghan Crowley
