Money Matters at the Royal Canadian Mint

Visit the Royal Canadian Mint to get a glimpse into Canada's currency production.

Visit the Royal Canadian Mint to get a glimpse into Canada’s currency production.

The Royal Canadian Mint, that imposing, fortress-like building on Sussex Drive, was first built in 1908 so that Canadian currency production could be moved from England to native soil. Although the Ottawa headquarters no longer strikes circulation coins (that job now belongs to the Winnipeg facility), it’s still responsible for collector and commemorative coins, gold bullion coins, and medals. Tours of the facility are available, and include information on coin creation, as well as a closer look at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic medals, the famous Million Dollar Coin, and a gold bar that’s worth more than $750,000. —Amy Allen
