In this day and age, plenty of restaurants include at least one vegetarian item on the menu. But wouldn’t it be nice to sit down at a place where the entire menu caters to those who have foregone meat altogether? Well, never fear — the Ottawa region has plenty of delicious options for vegans and vegetarians.

The Green Door is a staple in Ottawa. Since 1988, it’s been serving up delicious, wholesome foods using sustainable, local products. As a result, you’ll discover that the menu changes often, according to what’s in season. Popular dishes include the tofu and broccoli stir-fry; potato kale; vegetable curry; and spinach, mushroom, and tofu lasagna. Be sure to check out their extensive dessert selection as well — each decadent cake, pie, and cookie is made with organic and high quality ingredients, such as spelt flour and fresh fruits.

Take nutrition to the next level and stop in at SimplyRaw Express. Owned by Natasha Kyssa, a former model turned health coach, it boasts a menu that is 100 percent vegan  and mostly raw. Try one of their smoothies — the Tropical Mint is packed with pineapple, banana, romaine, mint, flax, and maple syrup — and definitely don’t miss out on their delicious, preservative-free cheezecakes, made with cashews.

The Table is popular with vegetarians and omnivores alike for their ability to adapt traditionally meaty dishes into something green. Their extensive menu relies on seasonal ingredients, and is replete with options such as shepherd’s pie, ratatouille, tofu balls, avocado salad, and an array of vegan, gluten-free cakes and squares. Although the restaurant is cafeteria-style, the atmosphere is given a homey touch with paintings by local artists.

One glance at the menu at Café My House will tell you that there’s no end to Chef Briana Kim’s creativity. From nut cheeses to tempeh benedicts to BLTs made with coconut bacon, your taste buds will be delighted by the flavours bursting from each dish. The menu changes every few weeks, according to what’s in season, but one thing’s for sure: you’ll never find yourself bored with the selection at this Hintonburg eatery.

Tucked away in Gatineau’s office district, this vegan restaurant is unassuming, but entirely worth seeking out. Its extensive menu carries staples such as salads, sandwiches, burgers, and pizzas, but it also doesn’t shy away from catering to more sophisticated palates — raw foodies will be interested in their raw quiche and raw sushi.
