Stop and Stay in Fernie

Aug. 26, 2016
By Naomi Witherick

Tackle the whitewater or throw out a fishing line. With the Elk River flowing through its district, Fernie is the perfect spot for a vacation on the water. And now you can stay even closer.

Fernie RV Resort is right on the riverbanks. The newest RV site in western Canada, it has 115 spacious sites including 71 back-in and 26 pull-through spots. And size isn’t an issue. All spaces are built to house Class A motor coaches, so you can pull up no matter how big your wagon.

Fancy getting even closer to nature? Pitch a tent in one of the resort’s 17 campsites on the edge of a lush forest, enjoy a night by the campfire and fall asleep to the sound of the gushing river nearby.

Get Out There

The Elk River sets a base for adventure. Get wet on whitewater rafting tour with Mountain High Adventures or Canyon Raft Company. Both offer the chance to battle the rapids, spot local wildlife and cliff jump into the sparkling emerald waters.

Or, for a more relaxing take on the water, go stand-up paddle boarding. The above companies run tours or you can rent your own downtown in Gear Hub.

Fishing is another favourite. Gear Hub provides high-end gear rentals and the Elk River Guiding Company run float trips and ‘walk and wade’ sessions to fish for bass, brook, rainbow and cutthroat trout.

You can book most activities at Fernie RV Resort’s Adventure & Activity Centre. Staff will help you plan everything from watersports to guided hiking, golfing and chairlift rides. And the resort’s partnerships with local activity providers mean you can often get a decent discount.

Discover Downtown

After the adventures, explore Fernie town. Founded in 1898, it’s the oldest community in the Elk Valley with historic structures and stonework dating back over 100 years. Stroll on a self-guided walking tour and delve into the town’s dramatic history at the Fernie Museum.

Then sample local pints at Fernie Brewing Company and grab a meal in the town’s eateries. You’ll find everything from cozy pubs to upscale bistros, serving Asian, Italian, Latin American or classic Canadian comfort food.

Fernie RV Resort runs a free shuttle for guests, taking you to and from anywhere in the area.
