Rocks in the Rockies

0.76 carat diamond set in white gold. Photo by Philippe of Banff

The sparkling diamond that caught your eye at a Banff jewellery store is probably from a Canadian mine. In fact, Canada will soon lead international diamond production—we’re gaining on Russia, and have surpassed South Africa. Canada offers the world’s only government-certified diamonds. To qualify, stones must be mined, cut and polished in Canada, and meet high standards of clarity, brilliance and cut. Certified Canadian diamonds are minutely engraved with a unique number and sold with a certificate of authenticity. — Jack Newton
