Top 3 Iconic Hotels of the Canadian Rockies

By SARA SAMSON

The Rocky Mountains have plenty to offer in the way of luxury getaways, but the area’s grandest accommodations are original Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) and Canadian National Railway (CN) hotels. Now operated under the Fairmont brand, the Banff Springs, the Chateau Lake Louise and Jasper Park Lodge offer historical significance, luxury and alpine adventure. Here, we offer a brief profile of each for guests looking for memorable stay in an iconic Canadian hotel.

1. The Fairmont Banff Springs

Alberta’s own “Castle in the Rockies” celebrates its 125th anniversary in the summer of 2013. Designed by Cornelius Van Horne the hotel is regarded as the birthplace of tourism in the Canadian Rockies. This breathtaking building, designed to resemble a Scottish baronial castle, is only minutes from downtown Banff, and contains a small resort all its own. Award-winning spa and golf course, horse stables, shopping concourse, 12 restaurants and a guest roster that included the likes of King George VI and Marilyn Monroe make this hotel one of Canada’s most famous iconic hotels.

2. The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise

Situated on the sparkling shore of its namesake, the Chateau Lake Louise was designed by Van Horne as “a hotel for outdoor adventure and alpinist.” This sense of adventure still rings true; the area offers snowshoeing and cross-country ski trails, hiking to remote teahouses, horseback riding, and skating and canoeing on stunning Lake Louise. The hotel also offers shopping, a spa and eight restaurants ranging from an intimate wine bar to a western style saloon.

3. The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge

This resort consists of a striking main building with outstanding lake and mountain views, as well as Jasper’s largest fireplace. Among the luxury cabins is “The Celebrity Cottage,” home to Marilyn Monroe in the 1960s when she was filming the River of No Return. Jasper Park Lodge (“JPL” to locals) offers an award-winning golf course, spa, nine dining options, horseback riding and tobogganing. Nearby Lake Mildred is groomed regularly in the winter for skating and hockey, and Lac Beauvert is prime for canoeing and kayaking.
