Where Canadian Rockies is proud to announce Brewster’s Banff Gondola as the winner of our Best New or Improved Attraction of 2016 award.
It comes after the facility’s $26-million renovation, which saw the incredible transformation of the gondola’s upper terminal. After 13 months in the works, the summit complex was officially opened October 6, when we had the privilege of presenting the award to Brewster president, David McKenna.
Speaking at the event, McKenna said: “It’s a four season experience, with world-class dining, world-class educational opportunities and something for everyone.”
And the state-of-the-art attraction indeed caters to all. Visitors can either hike or take the eight-minute ride to the top. Inside, there’s a large interpretive centre with display boards and interactive learning stations (which are as fun for the adults as the kids!) Domed screens show life-sized footage of mountain wildlife and an alluring dark room draws visitors into Banff’s night sky.
Also on offer is an awesome multi-sensory video experience in the Above Banff Theatre (included in the gondola fare). The movie features Banff’s most dramatic scenery presented with a musical score composed exclusively for the show. Three on-site restaurants include the Castle Mountain Coffee grab and go, upscale cafeteria Northern Lights Café and the elegant Sky Bistro.
And then, of course, there’s the view. See the dramatic panorama through glass walls on all four levels; outside on the large observation deck and rooftop terrace (available for private functions) or from the 1-km long boardwalk leading to National Historic Site, Cosmic Ray Station.
The award was presented by Where Canadian Rockies publisher, Jack Newton, who commented on the value of Brewster’s investments to the economy, both in Banff and across Alberta. He commended their ability to offer an accessible and easy way for tourists to experience the scenic range of the Canadian Rockies.
Brewster has been awarded similar Where awards in the past, with the Glacier Adventure & Skywalk and the Banff Lake Cruise both taking the best attraction title in previous years. Each mark their capacity to turn Canadian Rockies vacations into once in a lifetime experiences.
As part of the Canada-wide Where franchise, the 2016 award was presented to multiple attractions across the country. Other winners included Studio Bell, Home to the National Music Centre in Calgary, the RBC Convention Centre in Winnipeg and the Richmond Olympic Experience in Vancouver.
