Family travel guru and Budget Travel contributing editor Fran Golden has some excellent tips for surviving theme parks with the kids this summer. And with the opening of the largest roller coaster in Canada this summer and upgrades at the World Waterpark at the mammoth Edmonton Mall, Canadian kids have good reason to beg for a trip to an amusement parks this year.

Here are a few of our favourite tips from the article:

  • Give your kids a souvenir allowance and head off appeals for the endless shiny baubles before they start
  • Follow the theme park on Twitter and Facebook to take advantage of flash sales.
  • Safety tips: pin your name and cell phone number inside your kid’s clothing and take a photo of them with your phone that morning, in case you get separated.
  • Arrive at the park right when it opens. We’ve heard this before and it’s so true! Get there early and get to the most popular ride immediately to avoid lines.
