Best known for its temperate rainforest, Tofino is, logically, also known for its rain: it receives an average of 324 cm (10½ feet) every year.
Rather than try and fight the climate, the veteran Wickaninnish Inn, sequestered on a private section of Pacific oceanfront, embraces it.
“It’s going to rain, no matter what time of year it is,” says Jane Ince, who manages public relations for the Inn. Guests are invited to visit during what is known here as “storm-watching season”, from November through February, and to explore the beach and surrounding forest or watch the squalls from behind the inn’s huge picture windows in rooms and public spaces.
All rooms are equipped with yellow rain slickers and pants and guests can borrow a pair of classic gum boots at reception. Boot dryers are available in the Driftwood Lounge. Back in their rooms, guests can curl up in front of the gas fireplace snuggled in a Hudson Bay blanket and use binoculars to keep an eye on the waves and local wildlife, or soak in the tub while watching a storm roll in. “It’s just awe-inspiring,” Ince says. “You just stare at the storm and you can’t ever seem to look away.”
