Perks & Quirks: Seaweed Dreams at Sooke Harbour House, BC

Just an hour’s drive west of Victoria, on Vancouver Island, Sooke Harbour House is renowned for its gourmet restaurant, cozy atmosphere and personal touches—like cookie jars filled with homemade goodies scattered throughout the inn. But it’s the property’s connection with the surrounding natural world that perhaps makes the strongest impression on guests.

The restaurant serves only salad greens and herbs grown in its kitchen garden and the seaside inn has a natural seaweed garden just next door, which is harvested both for culinary use—a special sea vegetable-oriented menu is available upon request—and for “Sea-renity” spa treatments, such as seaweed oil aromatherapy and a mineral-rich dulse bath. Visitors can even get up close and personal with the ocean’s bounty by signing up for a seaweed tour with local expert Amanda Swiminer, who teaches about the many uses of the rich variety of sea flora growing in the area.
