Hotel of the Week: Nita Lake Lodge—Whistler BC

By WAHEEDA HARRIS

Nestled among the pine trees on the shores of Nita Lake, the cozy 77-room Nita Lake Lodge is a picture-perfect hideaway with large wood beams, grey slate floors, an oversize wood-burning fireplace in the lobby, a spacious outdoor stone patio and views of mountain, lake or forest from every room.

The lodge is set apart from the hustle and bustle of Whistler Village, but is just 10 minutes by car (or via the free shuttle), or you can take one of the complimentary bikes for guests and get there in an easy 30-minute  ride along the Valley Trail.

Every room and one- or two-bedroom suite has comfy chocolate brown leather furniture, a stone-covered gas fireplaces and a balcony, but if you want to go for broke, consider the Rainforest Suite, a 1,415-square-foot space with separate bedroom, a four-poster king-size bed, double soaker bathtub, large dining room with seating for six and a full-size kitchen, which can be staffed by one of the lodge chefs for an intimate dining experience.

Happy hour at Cure Lounge & Patio can start with a handcrafted cocktail paired with house-made charcuterie. Dinners are at Aura, where executive chef Michael Guy showcases Pacific seafood and seasonally inspired cuisine, infused with ingredients from the hotel’s roof garden, where more than 30 herbs and more than 40 vegetables are grown.

This being Whistler, activities only ramp up in winter, when you can skate on the lake or go snowshoeing; and the lodge is a five-minute walk (or less) from the Creekside lift at Whistler-Blackcomb.

The lodge is less than two hours by car from Vancouver or a laid-back three-and-a-half hours via the Rocky Mountaineer train.
