Two-Thirds of Business Travellers Plagued By Guilt

No one accrues loyalty program perks like business travellers, but apparently rewards come at a cost: namely, burnout, stress and, it seems, a major guilt trip.

A recent survey found that 62 per cent of business travellers feel guilty about their business trips, primarily, said two-thirds of respondents, for being away from their families or loved ones and missing important events like anniversaries or birthdays.

But instead of bringing flowers or souvenirs home, business travellers make proactive amends by overwhelmingly using their loyalty points to fund family vacations.

Not all trip guilt is relationship-based: 35 per cent of those surveyed said they feel guilty about unhealthy habits (eating poorly or skipping exercise) while on the road. Maybe partly because 90 per cent reported eating out on business trips to be dissatisfying (if you’ve had one Tim Horton’s breakfast sandwich, you’ve had ’em all).

The survey, conducted by Best Western International and Wakefield Research, was based on interviews with 500 U.S. business travellers in February, 2012.
