Three Must-Catch June Arts Fests in Edmonton

Freewill Shakespeare Festival. Photo by Andrew Paul.

Festivals in Edmonton are celebrating the arts in every form in June, including theatre, music, and art. Watch a vibrant adaptation of a classic play, hear some inspiring jazz music, or analyze a thought-provoking new work at one of these festivals:

Freewill Shakespeare Festival
June 23 – July 19
Now that the damage to the Heritage Amphitheatre tent has been repaired, the Freewill Players have returned to the “golden world” of Hawrelak Park for their theatre double feature, The Freewill Shakespeare Festival! As in other years, the festival presents two different genres to suit differing tastes: the romantic comedy As You Like It and the violent drama Coriolanus. In the former, after her cruel uncle banishes her from court, the young Rosalind flees to the Forest of Arden where, disguised as a man for her safety, she falls for Orlando. And in the latter, the stubborn and self-centred Coriolanus — once Rome’s great soldier and hero — sees all of his allies and Rome’s people turn against him. Whether you desire to witness romance or revolt, get thee to a show! For showtimes and tickets, visit the website or call 780-442-5311.

Edmonton International Jazz Festival
June 18 – 29
The Bad Plus Joshua Redman, Lisa Fischer, and Grand Baton headline this annual festival that heats things up across the city with performances from talented jazz musicians from around the world. Jazzworks Masterclasses are scheduled throughout the festival with visiting performers, at which participants can join in workshops to the compositions and performance behind jazz music. The Works Art & Design Festival
June 19 – July 1
Every year, outdoor exhibits transform downtown Edmonton into one of the largest art galleries in North America. Live artist demonstrations, art installations, an outdoor street market, food trucks, live music, and so much more occur during this eclectic arts festival that’s celebrating its 30th year! For details on venues and artists, visit the website or call 780-426-2122.
