Television host, children’s book author, playwright, performer — one way or another, Edmontonians know Bridget Ryan. She has been thriving in the entertainment scene for many years, and she’s only getting started.
An Edmontonian herself, Ryan performed on stage in New York City for several years before moving back home to begin a career in television (she is currently a host on Dinner Television). The awesomeness of her hometown has been a large part of her inspiration. “The beautiful thing about the job that I have is that it’s afforded me to meet so many interesting people… people who are fearless. And then you have to start walking the talk and be fearless yourself,” she says.
This fearlessness has blossomed Ryan’s career, and she continues her work in cabaret and theatre as both a writer and performer. She has a particular soft spot for live performances, which offer immediate feedback and gratification. Cabaret especially allows Ryan to break down the fourth wall and interact with her audiences, and the realization of her personal connection to music inspired her newest show, Under the Influence. “Cabarets are the perfect blend of story and song… [This show is] focused on the music and the stories that come from the music,” says Ryan. “Music that motivates, music that defines, music that crushes — those moments that are captured only through song in your memory.”
Ryan will have a lot of new material after this next year, which is already proving to be a busy one. Along with the cabaret, this tireless talent is also writing her first screenplay and making her children’s book series, Who is Boo?. into a children’s musical. “Storytelling is just something that I love doing,” she says. —Tamara Aschenbrenner
