Hot Attraction: Fall Festivals

If the weather outside is any indication, fall is well underway here in Edmonton! All the more reason to check out the plethora of festivals, and other activities, happening this weekend that celebrate familiar fall sights like pumpkins and scarecrows.

Scarecrow Festival (October 12 – 14): This is the final year to enjoy this beloved Halloween tradition. Families can enjoy a variety of fun, holiday-themed activities like face painting, a haunted house, Halloween crafts and games, scarecrow making, and cookie-decorating. General Admission $4; Children under 2 are free. Games and activities are an additional fee. All proceeds are donated to the ABC Head Start program. Magic and Masquerade Gala (Oct 12, 6 pm): Don your mask for this adults-only event, featuring an evening of fun with cocktails, a three-course  dinner, a roving magician, palm and tarot-card readers, live entertainment, caricature artists, a silent auction, and door prizes. Tickets are $100 each and must be purchased in advanced by phoning 780-461-5353 (ext 229) or online. Fantasyland Hotel in West Edmonton Mall, 8882-170 St.

Haunted Pumpkin Festival (Oct 13 – 14, 20 – 21, 27 – 28, 10 am – 5 pm): Enjoy a full day of festive family fun with a wagon ride, petting zoo, corn maze, haunted house, live music, magic show, corn maze, and scarecrow making amongst a rustic, picturesque farm setting. Also, be sure to pick the perfect pumpkin from the Pumpkin Patch, snack on a caramel apple or slice of pumpkin pie, or shop for a fantastic halloween costume. On Saturday nights, the Festival runs until 9 pm and guests can go for a Haunted Hayride or tackle the Flashlight Maze. General Admission $10.45; Children under 2 are free. Olde Time Fair on the Square (Oct 13, 10 am – 3 pm): There is something for everyone  at this festive event! Play a carnival game, take a horse-drawn wagon ride, enjoy a seasonal treat, practice your square-dancing skills, or enjoy performances from a variety of roving entertainers. The City Fall/Winter Farmers’ Market will also be open at this location, featuring a variety of locally made foods and products. Admission is free. Churchill Square 100 St & 101A Ave.

Medium Ghost Walk (Oct 14, 7 pm): Join The Edmonton Historical Society and paranormal researcher Rona Anderson on an insightful investigation of Edmonton’s past as you explore some of the haunted locations in Old Strathcona. Learn how to develop and understand your own sixth sense, and see if you can spot any otherworldly spirits out among familiar local venues. This is an adults-only event.  Cost is $30 per person and registration is required; email info@edmontonghosttours.com. Meet at Walterdale Playhouse 10322-83 Ave.

Haunted Hike (Oct 12 -13, 6 pm – 9:30 pm): Experience the thrills and chills of some spooky Halloween spectacles as you trek along a half-mile pathway through a wooded forest. This is a family-friendly event, however families with younger children will want to do the hike between 6 and 7 pm during the “Kid-Friendly” setup before it switches to the “Scary” setup at 7 pm. Be sure to wear appropriate footwear for walking and dress appropriately for the weather. Admission is by donation to the Stollery Children’s Hospital. There is no parking available directly at the hike site; visitors must utilize the Park and Ride service at Strathcona Station, 700 Bethel Dr. Sherwood Park.
