Happy Labour Day! In addition to taking in a performance at Symphony Under the Sky, we highly recommend that you use the extra time you’ll have this weekend to enjoy some of the events happening around Edmonton:
Movies on the Square:
What: Bring a lawn chair, relax outdoors, and enjoy a movie on a 3-storey high inflatable screen. Pirates Band of Misfits, The Lorax, and The Adventures of Tin Tin are the films that will be screened during this free event. There will also be pre-show activities in the Square before the film, so be sure to arrive early. More information on this event can be found here.
When: August 31 – 2, 7:30 pm nightly
Where: Churchill Square, Downtown Edmonton
Who: This is a family-friendly event; the film selections are appropriate for children of all ages.
Sonic Boom Festival:
What: This modern rock music festival brings together a string of music acts to create one of the most anticipated events of the year. This year offers an exclusive opportunity to see headliners Linkin Park who have never performed in Edmonton before. They will, of course, be closing out the show, but the whole day features a great lineup of popular artists who have produced some of the years’ most recognizable songs. Fans will be listening for songs like Fun.’s “We are Young” and Young the Giant’s “My Body”. Important event information can be found here. When: Sunday, September 2. Gates open at 11:30 am. Check out the set times for the event to be sure that you don’t miss out on seeing your favourite artist. There will be no re-entry if you choose to leave before the final performance ends at 11:00pm.
Where: Northlands Grounds, North Edmonton
Who: This is an all-ages event; no alcohol can be brought on to the premises. There will, however, be a designated, licensed beer garden for patrons over 18.
100th Anniversary Celebrations at Alberta Legislature:
What: This all-day event features a plethora of free and fun activities to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Alberta’s Legislature Building. There will be a number of on-going activities throughout the day, along with some scheduled entertainment. Here are some highlights that are not to be missed:
- Reminisce over the changes of the past century as the 1912 time capsule is opened to reveal mementos from Edmonton’s past (12:45 pm)
- Enjoy performances by some of Alberta’s most popular musicians: Brett Kissel, Big Sugar, and Paul Brandt (7 pm)
- Watch an elaborate fireworks display dazzle the sky to finish off the festivities (10:30 pm)

Where: Alberta Legislature Building, Downtown Edmonton
Who: This is an all-ages event; no alcohol will be allowed or served on-site.
