Red & White Calgary Comic & Toy Expo

The comics universe features a swirling, exploding, pantheon of heroes, heroines, creeps and critters. Red & White Calgary Comic & Toy Expo well reflects this masked profusion. Vendors will line the Red & White Club on the second floor of the Olympic Volunteer Centre with all manner of comics, Japanese manga, original comic artwork and toys, glorious toys.

As well, special guest artists will abound, including comic creators like Travis Sengaus, Jordan Oliwa, Nic Greasy, Cary Nord and Riley Rossmo. Well known for his depictions of all things spooky and monstrous, local musician and illustrator Tom Bagley is the event’s guest of honour, and the stars of Canadian Pickers will be in attendance, hunting for comic artifacts and signing autographs.

Organizers forbid nudity and swordplay, otherwise the universe is the limit at the event’s costume contest, which starts at 1:00. Expect a hugely colourful lineup of creatures and characters from the comic world.

The show takes place at the Red & White Club at the north end of McMahon Stadium (1817 Crowchild Trail NW), Sunday, September 16, 10 am – 4 pm. Admission is $5, children under 12 are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Visit www.comicandtoy.ca for more information. – Ian Doig
