Open Late: Exploring Calgary’s late-night dining scene

By Diane Klaver

If you’re out past midnight it can be hard to find good food. Sure there is a plethora of pizza joints and fast food places but why load up on greasy fries when you can get a well cooked meal at one of these late night restaurants.

Una Pizza & Wine: 17 Avenue’s stop for gourmet thin-crust pizza and Mediterranean-influenced cuisine. Chef “Pizza Steve” prepares dishes such as veal and pork meatballs cooked in tomato sauce, and pizza with prosciutto, ricotta and fresh arugula. Gluten-free pizza crust available. Kitchen open until 1 am. 618 – 17 Ave SW

Winebar: From the talent behind Muse, Winebar is a cosy basement establishment with a changing wine selection and bistro-style food. Find yourself a seat and sample the romesco dip with roasted peppers, tomatoes, almonds, and grilled flatbread. Be sure to stay for decedent desserts like the chocolate brownie. Tues to Thurs 4 pm – 1 am, Fri to Sun 4 pm -2 am. 1131 Kensington Rd NW.

Bottlescrew Bills: Boasting a selection of over 200 beers and ales from around the world including their own Buzzard’s breath Ale, this downtown pub is near the Scotiabank Saddledome making it an ideal spot for a late-night nibble after a hockey game. Try the classic sonofabitch stew or bison raviola. Mon to Sat 11 am – 2 am. 140 – 10 Ave SW.

The Keg Steakhouse: If a late-night steak is what you crave, The Keg has the cure. Try the New York; the king of steaks with a three cheese topping, or the filet mignon, tenderloin wrapped in applewood smoked bacon. They also have a selection of seafood, soups and salads. Mon to Fri 11 am – 1 am. 320 – 4 Avenue SW.

Brewsters: This relaxed environment is a perfect way to wind down at the end of your evening. Enjoy daily specials like original Brewsters burgers for $11 on Wednesdays, or hammerhead red ale pints for $5.25 on Saturdays. They also have 15 homemade beers to chose from. Tues to Thurs 11 am – 1 am. Fri and Sat 11 am – 2 am. 834 – 11 Ave SW.

Vin Room: Listed as one of Enroute Magazine’s Top 25 Hot Spots in 2009, Vin Room is a premier wine bar with 70 wines to sample. Pop by for a late night snack like fried garbanzo beans, or explore the internationally inspired tapas menu and ask your server for the best wine pairings. Fri and Sat 11:30 am – 1 am. 2310 – 4 St SW.
