When Calgary’s coffee-lovers look for a sophisticated cup of joe, they head to Phil and Sebastian Coffee Roasters. The local company is known for their coffee’s complex aromas, exotic tasting notes and creamy cappuccinos.
With locations in Marda Loop and Chinook Centre, the coffee shop offers delicious locally sourced baked goods, sandwiches and yoghurt cups in addition to their deluxe drinks. Baristas are not only friendly, they’re remarkably informed about their beans. Watching them create their drinks is as fun as watching a talented bartender.
The Marda Loop location hosts classes once a month, sharing the secrets to getting a perfect cup of coffee. A class on brewing covers French press, AeroPress and pour over methods, another class focuses on espresso techniques and machine maintenance, while a third class covers steaming milk and making foam art (note: the espresso class is a pre-requisite for the latter.) Classes range from $45 – $95 and can accommodate six to eight people. To book, visit Phil and Sebastian’s online shop.
Phil and Sebastian also operate a mobile espresso bar on the corner of 8th Ave. and 2nd Ave. SW weekday mornings until 3 p.m.. The pop-up shop is shared with Sidewalk Citizen Bakery, which offers delectable scones and two daily sandwiches filled with artisanal cheeses, local meats and vegetables. – Adele Brunnhofer
