Hot Art: Mythical Creatures

When B.C. artist Julia Lucich sat down to paint a traditional wildlife pictures of three giraffes, she found herself bored with the tan and brown shades. For fun, she began toying with different colours and hues in the body of the animals creating “Party Animal”—a realistic painting of giraffes in vibrant blues, purples, yellows and reds. Much to Lucich’s surprise, collectors were giddy about the energetic piece and craved more, prompting a series of horses, pigs, deer, bears, ducks and many others, several of which will be at this year’s Western Art Show, July 8 to 17 at the Calgary Stampede along with the Salt Spring Island artist herself, BMO Centre, Stampede Park, 1410 Olympic Way SE.
