Bakery 411

Whether you feel like a fudge brownie, a gourmet cookie, a cupcake or simply a piece of freshly baked sourdough bread, we’ve got it covered. In a hunt for the city’s tastiest baked goodies, we’ve found the places you won’t want to miss.

Although Bianky’s Bakery is named after a community in Egypt, it specializes in European food. Beautifully decorated cakes, fudge brownies and soft cookies greet the eye when you walk in this bakery on 17th Avenue. There’s also a selection of baguettes, soups, croissants and jumbo sour dough bread. The stylish look of the three-layered cakes at the bottom of the display case, make you feel as if you are in a bakery in Europe. A must try is ‘Bianky’s Signature Cake,’ which is made of pastry, cream, fresh fruits and decorated on the sides with grounded hazelnuts.

Beauty may be on the outside of Brulee Bakery’s desserts, for their shop is daintily decorated with fresh fruit and flowers, but take a bite of one of their many treats and you’ll see they taste just as sweet on the inside. Brulee offers centrepiece desserts, gift trays and cookie assortments as well as cakes and tarts. Their signature treat, the Lemon Cream Cake, consists of tart, lemon-syrup-brushed layers, with a filling of lemon curd and whipped cream and finished with a lemon buttercream icing.

Located in Marda Loop, Cookie Occasion has been offering freshly baked treats for over 15 years. Their cookie selection consists of 18 flavours that range from the creamy classic Peanut Butter to the popsicle inspired Creamsicle, which has swirls of orange and white Callebaut chocolates. Check out their PURE cookies as well, which are made for people with special dietary needs. Cookie choices in the PURE cookie line consist of yummy flavours like Sinful Spice and Midnight Magic (both organic-certified).

At Crave Cookies and Cupcakes, you can taste a variety of cookies and cupcakes made from scratch. This bakery was started by three sisters who wanted to share their mother’s dessert recipes with the city. With two locations (Kensington and 17th Ave), cupcakes are topped high with buttercream icing and are packed with innovative flavours such as Crave’s signature cupcake the Crave-O-Licious, which consists of a chocolate cake covered with light blue vanilla buttercream icing and sprinkled with chocolate shavings. For a smaller treat go for the mini cupcakes.

For 25 years, Decadent Desserts have been catering towards the sweet tooth. They have a variety of cakes, cheesecakes, pies, tarts, cookies, squares and dessert trays. Try the Fantasy Fudge cake, a rich, dark fudge cake filled with Callebaut chocolate and decorated with chocolate leafs.

For wheat-free, gluten-free, dairy-free breads and treats try the Earth’s Oven. Bakery products are geared toward people who have allergies or intolerances to traditional bakery products. There are over 20 gluten-free products to choose from, ranging from breads, muffins, cookies, bars, pies to pot pies. Enjoy the taste of corn bread, without gluten, soy or egg or a lemon coconut muffin without gluten, wheat, soy, dairy or egg.

Nestled in the heart of Chinatown, every corner of Jing Jing Bakery displays fresh baked goods. For lunch there’s BBQ pork buns, red bean crispy buns and ham and chicken pies. You can also choose from sweets like fruit cream rolls, coffee cream rolls, coconut tarts, egg tarts and even mini egg tarts.

Nectar Desserts provides an outlet to late night sweet indulgences. Open until midnight, their dessert bar’s changing menu offers up delectables that include tarts, cakes, ice creams and sorbets. Try such mouth watering treats as the Smoky Chocolate and Sea-Salt Caramel and Lemon Chiffon with Fresh Berries.

For bread fresh from the oven, try Urban Bakery. Their slow-rising handmade breads are made from whole grain and organic flours. No Trans Fats are used in any of their products. There’s over 15 different breads to choose from, ranging from the chocolate cranberry bread to focaccia bread. To satisfy a dessert craving there’s also specialty cakes, tarts and pies.—Chloe Jones
